Kudil is a tranquil farmhouse nestled within a dense coconut plantation, conceived as a soulful retreat where space, material, and light come together in quiet harmony. Rooted in modesty rather than overt grandeur, the home is designed to feel deeply lived-in—warm, grounded, and authentically connected to nature.
The client's brief called for a simple 3-bedroom residence with living, dining, kitchen, pooja, and a muttram. This muttram forms the soul of the house, grounded in Vaastu principles and acting as the organizing core around which all spaces are articulated. Designed to channel sunlight into the heart of the home, it establishes a constant dialogue between indoors and outdoors.
The architecture unfolds as three large volumes, each capped with sloped roofs. The central volume houses the muttram, while the other two accommodate the kitchen, bedrooms, and informal living and entertainment spaces. These volumes are seamlessly interconnected, creating fluid movement and visual continuity throughout the house. One of the volumes is designed as a generous indoor–outdoor transition zone, opening into the muttram through a reflective water body and layered landscape.
The muttram landscape itself is organized into three distinct zones: low planting that preserves visual openness, the pooja and water body as gentle transitional elements, and taller planting near the dining area to offer privacy without complete separation. This balance fosters both connection and quiet retreat.
Inside, the living spaces are bathed in natural light and finished in soft off-white hues that allow textures, materials, and furnishings to speak with understated elegance. The interiors embrace calm and restraint—muted tones, upholstered headboards, layered lighting, and minimal yet functional furniture create restful, clutter-free environments.
Wardrobes and TV units are sculpted on site by local artisans using solid wood and cane, celebrating craftsmanship and material honesty. Sofas and beds are dressed in carefully selected pastel fabrics, adding softness and warmth. The ensuite bathrooms echo this tactile sensibility, where micro-concrete walls meet sculptural quartz stone basins, blending functionality with refined expression.
In essence, Kudil is a thoughtfully designed 7,100 sq ft farmhouse that reflects modern sensibilities through timeless principles. Anchored by its muttram and shaped by light, craft, and landscape, the home offers a serene sanctuary—quietly luxurious, deeply rooted, and in harmony with its natural surroundings.
